Speak Up for Syracuse! Stop the cuts! Save Centro!

The Central NY Regional Transportation Authority (CENTRO) is proposing drastic service cuts that would reduce and eliminate bus routes. A cut to bus service will hurt our community. Funding for public transit cannot be put on the backs of CENTRO riders. Low-income families, students, seniors, disabled people and workers all depend on this service. Public transportation is a public good and there are alternatives to fare increases and cuts.

We the undersigned request that our New York State representative support increased funding for public transit and work with the board of Centro to ensure increased funding for the future.

I am a student who uses public transit as my primary means of travel. By cutting Centro funding, not only will Syracuse alienate many students from ESF and Syracuse University, but it will also weaken the city’s reputation as a modern cosmpolitan community. Instead of cutting Centro funding, the city needs to invest more heavily in public transit improvement projects, including means by which to promote bus travel and grow Centro ridership.

I rely on this service to get me to and from work, shopping, dr’s ect. The past cuts in routes made it a lot harder to get around town and almost cost me a job since one of the proposals where to eliminate the whole run, thank goodness they didn’t cut it but did decimate it. No one is going to rely on a service that is going to make things more complicated and time consuming than it already is. Quit blaming the ridership and start blaming the top who seem to be the ones with their hands in all the money. You can’t ride a system that isn’t there you know.

It is vital to save Centro houses. Those who work night shifts will lose their jobs. Those who rely on buses to shop on holidays, Sundays, and late in the evening, can’t. This would hurt businesses as well.

Being from Long Island, there is no comparison in the way the buses are run here. I worked on Thompson Rd in Dewitt and I live in Liverpool. If my car was down, it would have taken me two hours to get to work using the CENTRO. If it was my only source of transportation it’s worth the sacrifice because it’s what people depend on. Don’t cut services.
